EMBROIDERED OYSTER

[ Tufted Carpet ]

The project “Embroidered Oyster” explores the translation of digital renderings into tactile materiality.

The main focus of the piece is the design process ‚From Render to Textile.‘ It begins with experiments to create different virtual textures that simulate leathers and textiles, such as the embroidery of an oyster illustration. Afterwards, woven straps are 3D-modeled and then mapped with the textures. The final renderings of the virtual textiles are reinterpreted within the physical space of textiles. By converting pixel-based information into hand-crafted structures, the process challenges the boundaries between virtual and physical making.

The physical textile is a unique, hand-crafted carpet measuring 120 × 120 cm, simulating four woven straps in a canvas weave. The surface is created with a tufting gun using only leftover yarn. The oyster—symbolizing irregular beauty—becomes a vehicle to explore depth, contrast, and surface articulation. The project thrives on contrasts, such as the shininess of virtual visuals versus the matt finish of the yarn.
